Renewable energy is defined as energy that comes from sources that replenish themselves on a human timescale, such as wind, solar energy, geothermal heat, rain, tides, etc. This can be in the forms of solar farms, wind turbines, hydroelectric power plants, and geothermal power plants. This raises the availability of electricity to different places, helping them reduce their reliance on fossil fuels, which may or may not even be available in their area.
However, while these sources may be mostly positive, some also have negative drawbacks. Hydroelectric dams and biomass plants (power plants that burn wood to create energy) both have big impacts on the environment. For example, creating giant hydroelectric dams diverts the flow of the river, and may drastically impact animals that are dependant on the river, like fish.
